Food Trends

The poll’s still open if you care to vote, but judging from the early results, food trends will be a popular topic.

Now, I can’t back this up with paperwork, but I think I stumbled upon a new trend in drinking water.

cucumberI was at Guelph’s Borealis Grille & Bar for lunch a few weeks ago and asked for water with lemon. The server wondered if I’d like to try their cucumber water instead. I’d never heard of this combination before, but since Borealis is based on local food, it made more sense to serve water with cukes than imported lemons.

Our server brought my drink — water with a simple slice of English cucumber in it. The first sip was a little off putting since my mouth was geared to the tang of lemon, but I quickly found the drink subtly refreshing — bordering on addictive.

A few days later, my husband came home from the supermarket with cucumber soda water. He had the same reaction. Wasn’t sure about the first few sips, and then… loved it.

It’s still winter and we’re enjoying cucumber in our water, both fizzy and still. I can’t imagine how much we’ll guzzle come the heat of summer.

So, is this refreshing local twist the new way to drink water or have I been oblivious to this non-trend? If you’ve tried cucumber water, did you like it as much as we do?

The first time that I had cucumber water was at the cottage last summer — created by my niece. For the first glass, I was quite unsure of it, but, being a loving aunt, I soldiered on. Now, I love it — flat or sparkling. I prefer it over lemon. I had not made the local connection, but that makes it an unbeatable choice to me.

  2. Kathryn, I’m glad I’m not the only one who followed the pattern of unsure to unbeatable.

  3. I love cucumber water! We tried this last summer after seeing it in a magazine – I froze some into little cubes and putting them in ice water on the table is lovely especially on a warm summer night…

Cucumber water doesn’t seem to have made its way across the pond to the UK as I can honestly say I’ve never seen it anywhere here. I’m intrigued by the thought of it though and want to taste it now… someday soon perhaps. I shall be keeping an close eye on the shelves at my local supermarkets.
